Frayed Continuum, Pendulum (2019)

Frayed Continuum is a kinetic sculpture made of two discarded fragments of architecture, hanging on a pendulum mechanism. One element that contains traditional ornamentation and the other that references the ‘western’ ideals that began influencing ornamentation in India post-colonization.

Hanging on a pendulum mechanism, both ornaments rotate freely on their own axis and are partly constrained by the movement coded into the mechanism that creates occasional disruptions and collisions. The pendulums movements layer and collapse time and histories, resulting in an alteration or erasure caused in the present, evidenced by the residue on the floor of the work.

Frayed Continuum, Hurricanes (2020)

Two discarded architectural fragments, previously used as brackets between the wall and ceiling, create this work. Both ornaments are from buildings in India, one is approximately 90 and the other 50 years old, both move on their separate orbits, partly constrained by the movement coded into the mechanism that creates occasional disruptions and pauses.

Referring to our present moment of continued divisive political rhetoric, and given the symbolism of the forms within nationalist discourse, the movements layer and collapse the two elements, with time and continued collision resulting in an alteration or erasure of their forms, chipping away the histories they embody.

Frayed Continuum, Chicago/Delhi (2018)

Frayed Continuum is a kinetic sculpture made of fragments of architectural ornaments that contain carved filigrees of a similar aesthetic and embody a dense history of the city's past. Created in Chicago early this year, this work entices conversations about commerce, exchange, time, displacement, and through its movement provides a meditation on location and experience.

The mechanism rotates clockwise and anticlockwise at varying speeds, while the ornaments move additionally on their own axis, on a coded dance that creates caresses, soft collisions and occasional disruptions. Over time, the ornaments begin to alter one another, accumulating an amalgamated debris on the floor of the piece.
